The NAMS Firefly system by Carrier Management Systems, Inc. has proven to be an essential tool in The Champaign Telephone Company’s arsenal for revenue assurance and voice traffic management. The Champaign Telephone Company has been a customer of CMSI since 2001.

Our initial investment in the NAMS 2000 system was to act as the AMA mediator and a trunk traffic study device for our Nortel DMS-100. With the evolution of the Phantom Traffic product, NAMS was able to pull information from our AMA records that indicated that we had an adjacent carrier sending unauthorized traffic through mutual EAS trunks for termination. The final agreement with that carrier resulted in The Champaign Telephone Co. being awarded compensation in the amount that surpassed the initial investment in the NAMS system.

From 2001 to 2009, we had run the same NAMS 2000 server with nearly zero downtime. It collected the AMA from our legacy DMS and our new MetaSwitch for its own reporting purposes, and transferred the AMA records to our CABS billing system daily. It also collected traffic peg counts for trunk traffic studies and was a LERG source for the company.

During last year, our CABS department began to run into disputes for calls coming from a wireless carrier utilizing the common carrier trunk group we have with the ABC LATA tandem. The carrier was disputing the long agreed upon standard of 75/25 ratio of Intrastate calls to Interstate calls on terminating traffic. They were targeting a 50/50 relationship and began to "re-rate" our CABS bill with them using this formula, withholding funds in the thousands of dollars. We, in Network Operations, had no method of parsing out that particular carrier’s AMA records from other carriers using that trunk group; therefore, we had little in physical evidence to dispute their claims. Also, the middle carrier demonstrated no interest in helping us form a more accurate study.

That is when CMSI’s NAMS Firefly SS7 product came to mind. With an upgrade to the new NAMS Firefly system, we would have additional tools to not only investigate trunk traffic from an AMA perspective, but also from the actual SS7 ISUP perspective. In Nov 2009, we upgraded to the new NAMS Firefly platform which took over the traditional operations of our old NAMS 2000 system and added the SS7 monitoring functionality. With the ability to generate reports based off the JIP of an IAM message, we were able to isolate the wireless carrier’s traffic, show in .pdf format that the ratio was more 20/80 in our favor of Intrastate traffic. With this data and the threat of taking further legal action, that carrier submitted and paid the back charges in full. Once again, those charges exceeded our initial investment in the Firefly system and assured that The Champaign Telephone Co. will continue to get compensated accordingly. That is what I call revenue assurance.

I cannot express my gratitude to CMSI enough for what their product has been able to do for us, not only in major conflicts as mentioned above, but also in providing us with the tools to better manage our voice network. Their support has been among the finest in the industry. Through their vigilant monitoring of the NAMS system, their TAC is usually the first ones to identify if there is an issue with our AMA records not being collected and transferred for processing. CMSI’s training staff has assisted us in developing reports that allow us to study our voice traffic based on specific needs. In these days of "rogue" carriers, I believe that CMSI offers a product to the independent carrier that is vital for revenue assurance and traffic monitoring.
